A Guide To Short Hand Crochet Abbreviations

There are so many abbreviations in crochet, I bet you haven’t seen a few of them before!

I have curated a list below of the ones I know and sometimes use. Abbreviations are not always in capitals and are not always used within a pattern. So, save this page for the next time you might get stuck on an abbreviation you’re unfamiliar with.

ALT = Alternate

APPROX = Approximately

BEG = Begin/Beginning

BL or BLO = Back Loop/Back Loop Only

BO = Bobble

BP = Back Post

BPDC = Back Post Double Crochet

BPDTR = Back Post Double Treble Crochet

BPHDC = Back Post Half Double Crochet

BPSC = Back Post Single Crochet

BPTR = Back Post Treble Crochet

CC = Contract Colour

CH = Chain

CH SP = Chain Space

CL = Cluster

CONT = Continue

DC = Double Crochet

DC2TOG = Double Crochet 2 Together

DEC = Decrease

DTR = Double Treble Crochet

EDC or EXDC = Extended Double Crochet

EHDC or EXHDC = Extended Half Double Crochet

ESC or EXSC = Extended Single Crochet

ETR or EXTR = Extended Treble Crochet

FL or FLO = Front Loop/Front Loop Only

FOLL = Following

FP = Front Post

FPDC = Front Post Double Crochet

FPDTR = Front Post Double Treble Crochet

FPHDC = Front Post Half Double Crochet

FPSC = Front Post Single Crochet

FPTR = Front Post Treble Crochet

( ) or [ ] = Work within the brackets as directed

FSC = Foundation Single Crochet

* = Repeat instructions after single asterisks

HDC = Half Double Crochet

* * = Repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed

HDC2TOG = Half Double Crochet 2 Together

INC = Increase

LP = Loop

M = Marker

MC = Main Colour

PAT = Pattern

PC = Popcorn Stitch

PM = Place Marker

PREV = Previous

PS or PUFF = Puff Stitch

REM = Remaining

RND(S) = Round(s)

REP = Repeat

RS = Right Side

SC = Single Crochet

SH = Shell

SC2TOG = Single Crochet 2 Together

SC DEC = Single Crochet Decrease

SK = Skip

SL ST = Slip Stitch

SM or SL M = Slip Marker

SP = Space

ST = Stitch

TBL = Through Back Loop

TCH or T-CH = Turning Chain

TOG = Together

TR = Treble Crochet

TRTR = Triple Treble Crochet

TR2TOG = Treble Crochet 2 Together

WS = Wrong Side

YO = Yarn Over

YOH = Yarn Over Hook
